Care
Light: Cacti prefer bright, indirect sunlight. Direct sunlight can cause sunburn or sunscald, so it's best to place it near a window that faces east or west or to protect it with sheer curtains.
Watering: Fairly drought-tolerant and does not need to be watered frequently. Water the plant thoroughly when the soil is completely dry to a depth of about 2-3 inches. Allow the soil to dry out completely before watering again. Over-watering can cause the roots to rot, so be careful not to overwater.
Soil: Cacti prefer well-draining soil that is sandy and gritty. A commercial cactus or succulent mix is ideal for this plant.
Fertilization: This cactus does not need to be fertilized frequently. It's best to fertilize it once a month during the growing season with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer. Do not fertilize during the winter months when the plant is dormant.
Humidity: This cactus species is native to arid regions and is used to low humidity levels. Normal indoor humidity levels are sufficient for this plant.
Temperature: Cacti are hardy and can tolerate temperatures as low as 50°F. However, it's best to keep the temperature between 60°F and 90°F for optimal growth.
Propagation: Cacti can be propagated from stem cuttings or by division. To propagate from stem cuttings, cut a 4-6 inch stem from the parent plant and allow it to callus over for a few days. Then plant the cutting in well-draining cactus soil and keep it in bright, indirect light. Keep the soil moist but not wet until roots have formed and new growth appears.
Blooming: This cactus species produces yellow or orange flowers on the tips of its branches during the summer months. The flowers are tubular and are followed by small, fleshy fruits.
